Is the eclipse a sign that Jesus is coming back, that the world is ending, or that Christians should be worried?

What is it that we should be feeling and doing as Christians during this much-hyped solar eclipse? Is it simply a natural, scientific occurrence, or is there a supernatural component? Are Christians reading too much into it, unduly seeking a sign of prophetic warning, or is God to be completely dismissed from the picture, acknowledging the science of natural order alone?

Christian responses to the solar eclipse vary from fear to disdain

So many Christians are getting het up over the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse. But is the beginning of the end really upon us?

I recently shared a brief post about it on social media, and I wanted to share it with here because I’ve seen so much discouragement, fear, dismissiveness, and even harsh rebuke of Christian against Christian.

This is not a time for fear or for unloving attitudes among the body.

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding of believers by believers, and perhaps miscommunication or lack of clarity.

It’s with that concern on my heart that I share at all, and it is brief.

But first, let me show you the Facebook posts that I highlighted in my own post—I marked them up a bit in my post, so I wanted to show you the originals here before you read my take:

And here’s the second post I share in its original form:

My take on Christian concerns about the eclipse

Now that you’ve had a chance to read those posts for yourself, here’s what I shared on social media, I hope it will be encouraging to you:

I’m not going to offer much commentary about the eclipse because I don’t think it can quickly or easily be summed up. As for some Christians wondering about the eclipse and not easily dismissing it as science and a natural occurrence alone, some other Christians are labeling such wonderings as “omen-seeking” or “astrology.” Personally, I believe that’s a bit harsh.

As for me, I WILL be wondering about it, but mostly I will be wondering AT it, in awe of God’s creation and power over all things.

Believe it or not, the eclipse is a display of His power and might, among many other things I notice daily—His mercies, Christ’s atonement for sin, the breath in my lungs, the Holy Spirit’s indwelling of my life, my numerous blessings, my eyesight, the sound of the wind, the visual delight given by flowers, and on and on I could go.

The most important things are what they have always been—praying, loving, serving, and sharing the good news of Christ’s death for sins and resurrection to life that offers life eternal for anyone who will repent and trust in Him. If the eclipse provides opportunities for us to share this good news, praise God.

THAT should be our focus tomorrow and every day. And as always, we should look heavenward, eagerly awaiting the Lord’s return.💛

P.S. My only concern would be any attempts of mankind to take advantage of this event to cause chaos or partake in evil and create some sort of narrative featuring the eclipse. But I’m not worried about this as the Lord knows every evil intent of each heart and will only allow what He will. And I praise Him again, for He stoops so low as to incline His ear to our prayers—and so we should pray for safety and truth.💛

Wisdom for Christians concerned about the eclipse—God’s Word of comfort

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV

So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Matthew 6:34, NLT

I really do believe it’s as simple as this: remember that God is NOT the author of fear, that He has given us a sound mind, and we are instructed not to fret.

Be blessed today as you marvel at God’s creation (as always)!

And if you choose to observe the eclipse, use the proper precautions to protect your vision! 💛

Final thoughts on Christian concerns about the solar eclipse

Christian, don’t get caught up in feelings and hype surrounding the eclipse. It is a scientific occurrence, not a specific prophetic warning, nor is it an indicator of Christ’s return today. However, don’t let that stop you from focusing your concern on those without Christ—always look for an occasion to share the gospel, and always be looking up, awaiting His return!
