What exactly is Holy Week?

According to this article from GotQuestions.org, Holy Week (or Passion Week) is the week from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday, and it focuses on “the passion with which Jesus willingly went to the cross in order to pay for the sins of His people.”

From Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem to people laying down palms before Him and shouting, “Hosanna!” to His trial, crucifixion, and resurrection, we can choose to make Holy Week a time of solemn and thankful reflection.

It’s a time to remember everything Christ endured for us. He was falsely accused and arrested, convicted and sentenced to death unjustly, and He suffered mocking, agonizing scouring, and the drawn-out, torturous death of being nailed to a cross.

And why? He could have saved Himself at any moment, and was even mocked for not doing so in order to prove His divinity, but He had a greater plan, all because of His great love for us.

This is what Passion Week or Holy Week is all about—remembering Christ’s great sacrifice, His triumph over the grave, and the salvation He extends to each one of us, if we only pick up our cross and follow Him. 💖

Why should we participate in Holy Week?

Did you know that many people who identify as Christians live their lives however they choose, only stopping a couple of times a year to pause and celebrate Easter and Christmas?

And how easy would it be to go along with the world, merely participating in Easter baskets, chicks and candy, and having your kids’ pictures made with the Easter bunny?

Not to say that doing those things is wrong, not at all, but if they’re what defines Easter for us, then the most important thing—the Lord Jesus—is sadly missing.

Easter or Resurrection Sunday is the culmination of Holy Week—Christ’s victory over sin, hell, and death—and what a reason to celebrate!

But how much more should we also understand HOW He accomplished such a blessed feat, and thank Him with the whole of our hearts for suffering in our place so that we don’t have to face eternal punishment for our sins.

Holy Week is a wonderful time to do just that, to open our Bibles and recall exactly what happen at the cross and the empty tomb.
