Is Halloween so evil that we shouldn’t share the gospel?

Does witnessing for Christ count as celebrating the day?

Is Halloween something that Christians must avoid altogether, regarding it as an evil and unclean day, or can we still minister to others and share the gospel on October 31st without participating in the tradition of Halloween?

What does Halloween mean for us as Christians… Is it all in good fun? Should we celebrate it, or should we fear it?

As for me, I do not celebrate, but whether we choose to do so or not should never stop us from sharing the love of God through the gospel of grace.

Ray Comfort from Living Waters Ministries recently shared a post on Facebook encouraging believers to continue to share the good news on October 31.

I was so shocked to see some of the comments that were left on his post!

Here’s what Ray’s original post said:

“We can follow Jesus’ steps by using the darkest night of the year, Halloween, as a way to shine the brightest of all lights—the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. We can turn the tables on the enemy.”

I couldn’t believe that Christians could object to such a thing. But here are some of the responses:

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read comments from Christians who were actually arguing AGAINST sharing the gospel.

😟💔

Isn’t that so incredibly sad?

Now please understand, in no way do I condone or encourage the celebration of Halloween.

But this is the really concerning and heartbreaking part: these Christian commenters are conflating sharing the gospel on a certain calendar day with encouraging or participating in Halloween practices!

Just imagine you were to ask any of these people the general question, “Should Christians share the gospel year round?”

Most would respond with, “Of course! We should share the love of God and the good news every day!”

And yet the combination of a date on a calendar and the name of a pagan holiday has scared them away from sharing the gospel lest they be labeled “participants.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

God is Lord over every day, and we must proclaim the gospel

Meanwhile, here’s what’s really true:

Doing nothing to celebrate Halloween + sharing the gospel ≠ participating in Halloween.

On the contrary, it makes it pretty clear that you do NOT condone Halloween and instead proclaim Christ.

And just think—what better opportunity do we have as believers to share the gospel than people coming right up to our doors?

We should take the opportunity to give generously and share the gospel, every day, including Oct. 31. Each day belongs to the Lord God.

I said each day belongs to the Lord God.

So please, I beg of you, don’t make the same mistake as some of these commenters.

When little children and their parents come to our doors, we can either be generous with a treat and a gospel tract, or we can hide with our lights off. Christ says to let our light SHINE.

So let’s do just that and let the light of Christ shine out clearly! Because answering the door and sharing the good news is not the same as participating in Halloween. It is the opposite—shining the light of the glorious gospel.

So let’s be a bright beacon of truth in the darkness! 🌟

Have you gotten your gospel tracts and sweet treats ready to hand out when kids show up at your door ready to receive them?

If not, check out my Christian version of a “Halloween” Outreach Headquarters for witnessing to trick-or-treaters!

(Disclaimer: Using the word Halloween does not mean I condone celebrating any evil practices, witch costumes, magic spells, etc. It’s simply a term referring to the day that trick-or-treating occurs, and trick-or-treaters are the people we’ll be able to easily reach with the gospel. We won’t be celebrating, but witnessing! Hopefully this isn’t an issue and should be understood, but given the comments on the post above, I thought I’d better clarify.)

We need to be ready with tracts and treats so we can be a blessing by shining the light of truth on a dark day.

What about Trunk-or-Treat?

If your church participates in a trunk-or-treat event, consider handing out tracts or these awesome gospels of John (affiliate link) along with the candy.

Here’s what they look like:

I’ve seen and heard about so many churches using trunk-or-treat as a way to “reach out” to the community, which means they’re trying to get people to notice their church and hopefully start attending.

But many of these events merely pass out candy but not the gospel! Can you imagine? When that’s the case, it truly is the same as what the world is doing, and those churches become part of the celebration of Halloween as there is nothing to set them apart. What a waste!

Each child who stops by a church trunk-or-treat should NEVER leave without a gospel tract or even a copy of a gospel.

If a church is putting on a trunk-or-treat that doesn’t include the gospel message, that is a huge problem.

Grab some fantastic gospel tracts for your trunk-or-treat today and make your church’s event have a meaningful, ETERNAL impact!

Final thoughts on whether it’s okay to share the gospel on Halloween

While Halloween can be a touchy subject for some Christians, we must remember that every day belongs to God, and none of inherently evil. We are are called to share the truth of the gospel every day, and Halloween is no exception. Give generously to those who seek a gift, sharing the greatest gift on the darkest of nights—the saving gospel!
