What we can learn from Charlie Kirk’s life and death

Why was Charlie Kirk assassinated, and what can we take away from the legacy he leaves behind?

Some say he was a divisive figure, some claim he’s a martyr, and still others are using his death for their political agenda. How do we make sense of it all, and what is causing this escalation of political violence?

Charlie Kirk, assassination or martyrdom?

Where were you when you heard the news?

I was sitting at my desk typing an email when the news came that Charlie Kirk had been shot.

When I heard the news, it seemed unreal. While searching for more information, the reality started to sink in, and I began to pray.

I found myself in tears. Lifting my hands, I asked God to be merciful, to spare his life.

I know Charlie had so much work left to do here for the Lord… I prayed that God would heal him, allow him to survive and that his resulting testimony would bring Him great glory.

It didn’t happen.

Yes, the Lord heard my prayers, and those of so many thousands and maybe millions.

But God had already numbered the days of Charlie Kirk’s life. And while evil was the root of the action that took his life, God will work in ways that only He can to bring about a greater glory through his death and the legacy of his bold witness.

After all, as someone pointed out so wisely in Regent University’s 40 Days of Prayer group the next morning, a seed must die to bring a greater harvest.

Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.

John 12:24, NKJV

How Charlie used his life in service to God

Charlie Kirk’s death was not simply a political assassination as has been reported. He was martyred.

But wasn’t he just a political activist?

He was that, but he was more. His political convictions were shaped by his faith in Christ, and he proclaimed the gospel at every opportunity, at every speaking event, and even moments before his death:

“Jesus Christ was a real person, He lived a perfect life, He was crucified, died, and rose on the third day, and He is Lord and God over all.”

Charlie Kirk, Utah Valley University, 9/10/25

He died proclaiming the gospel.

The Lord allowed the shooting to happen, and already we can see how many people have been reading the news, watching videos online, finding out who Charlie Kirk was and what he could have possibly said that upset someone so much that they wanted to kill him.

Praise God, these people will hear the gospel when they search the name of Charlie Kirk!

And what a powerful witness it will be to many lost and confused souls, to hear about the love of Christ from a man who was murdered for sharing such wonderful truth.

Pray for many salvations through this!

Charlie’s death will not be in vain, we can be sure of that! God will take what was meant for evil and work good through it, somehow, in His ways that are far beyond our understanding.

He always does. He is always good.

What we can learn from Charlie’s death

We can always trust the Lord, and we must continue to do so, and to proclaim truth and not give in to fear.

But, church, we must pray.

Let us thank God for Charlie’s life and far-reaching witness for Christ Jesus, and pray that His name will be glorified through Charlie’s life and death.

Pray for Charlie’s family, that God will comfort them in their grief.

Ask the Lord to help us not to seek vengeance or act out against those who hate us for Christ’s sake.

Pray for people’s spiritual eyes to be opened, to see the evil in this world and see their need for God’s forgiveness, for His love and mercy.

Pray that believers would be bold and step up to proclaim the truth of the gospel in love.

That we would be quick to forgive and slow to anger, as God has commanded us.

And this includes praying for the murderer, that he would realize the horror of his sin, repent, seek God’s mercy that is available to all, and turn to Christ.

Pray that we would imitate Jesus in loving our neighbor at all costs, even unto death.

Carrying on Charlie Kirk’s legacy

The 40 Days of Prayer zoom call the morning after Charlie’s murder was such a balm in the midst of heartache.

I want to share with you some of the prayers that were lifted, anonymously of course.

Prayer for warriors in spiritual battle
Prayer to be bold in sharing Jesus
prayer for millions to come to God
prayer for light in the darkness
prayer about being absent from the body and present with the Lord

Aren’t these prayers beautiful? There were many more like them, and oh, how I wish you could’ve heard the prayers spoken this morning!

The prayers of God’s people are such a comfort at a time like this, and we can be sure it is a sweet aroma to the Father.

Just to know that we are not alone in our faith, we are not alone in our prayers, and that these sweet brothers and sisters in Christ always point us back to scripture is such a blessing.

Here are some scriptures that will encourage your heart today.

Comfort in tragedy through scripture & prayer

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked came against me
To eat up my flesh,
My enemies and foes,
They stumbled and fell.

Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.

One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord,
And to inquire in His temple.

For in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock.

And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me;
Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

Psalm 27:1-6, NKJV

PRAYER: Yes, Lord, You are our light, our salvation, and our strength! Help us to always seek You, to run to You instead of our fears.

Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
And wither as the green herb.

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.

Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.

He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
And your justice as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more;
Indeed, you will look carefully for his place,
But it shall be no more.

Psalm 37:1-10, NKJV

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your word to us to fret not. Again and again You tell us, “Fret not!” Help us to trust in You, to wait on You to bring an end to wicked schemes in Your time and for Your glory. Help us to turn from anger. Empower us to do good and to love those who seek to do harm.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:7-11, NKJV

PRAYER: Lord, help us to love others, no matter how they might hurt us or anger us… Help us to love and not show wrath. To study your Word and learn from Christ how to live in a way that honors You, especially in times of tragedy and heartache. Help us to love one another.

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Matthew 5:43-45, NKJV

PRAYER: Oh Father, please help us to love even our enemies—those who hate us! Help us to do good to them! You love each person, each one created in Your image. And even those who rebel against You and do evil—such were we before we were born again. Please pour out Your compassion and love into our hearts so we can demonstrate Your love to others through our words and actions.

22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.

23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I hope in Him!”

Lamentions 3:22-24, NKJV

PRAYER: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Father! For Your goodness to us, for Your mercies that are new every day! Thank You for Your faithfulness to us, even when we are unfaithful. Help us to always hope in You.

We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:8, NKJV

PRAYER: Lord, what a wonderful hope! Even when we lose loved ones—those close to us or those brothers and sisters who’ve made an impact on us from afar as Charlie Kirk will continue to do—what a hope that we can yet rejoice in our grief! Because to absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, hallelujah!

55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:55-58, KJV

PRAYER: Oh Father, we thank You and praise You that we can ask, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” and assuredly answer, “GONE!” Through the blood of Christ for our sins and redemption! Thank You!
